About the mission

What is the National Technical Textiles Mission?

The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, aimed at positioning India as a global leader in the field of technical textiles.

Technical textiles are textile materials and products manufactured primarily for technical performance and functional properties rather than aesthetic characteristics — with applications across automobiles, civil engineering and construction, agriculture, healthcare, industrial safety, and personal protection, among other industries.

To drive this vision, NTTM works across four key components:

Component

Research, Innovation & Development

Component

Promotion & Market Development

Education, Skilling & Training

Why education

Closing India's technical textiles skills gap

One of the major factors affecting the growth of technical textiles in the country is the lack of quality manpower — specially educated and trained engineers and professionals, and highly skilled workmen, for both manufacturing and application areas of technical textiles.

To become a world leader in technical textiles over the next decade, India must place focused emphasis on building an effective knowledge and world-class skill ecosystem. Under Education, the goal is to raise the level of education of prospective Indian engineers in technical textiles, ensuring an adequate volume of talent is developed in the segment.

To achieve this, NTTM launched the "Scheme for Enabling Academic Institutes in Technical Textiles Education," supporting higher education institutions through new UG and PG degree programmes, integration of technical textile courses into existing curricula, modernisation of institutional infrastructure, advanced laboratory facilities, and specialised faculty training.
